Inhabited during Etruscan times, as can be seen from the 6th Century BC Etruscan obelisk which is now housed on the ground floor of the Palazzo della Corgna, a new brick wall was built around the structure during the 11th Century thus creating Pieve Castle.
The main buildings in the city centre were constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries, using a brick type of which Città della Pieve has been an important producer since Medieval times.
In 1450, this Umbrian town was the birth place of Pietro Vannucci known as ‘il Perugino’, a student of Verrocchio and Piero della Francesca and teacher of Raphael.
In the heart of the city there is Piazza Gramsci, which plays host to the Cathedral, the Palazzo della Corgna (with paintings by Niccolò Circignani, known as Pomarancio) and the Torre Civica. The Piazza leads to the Santa Maria dei Bianchi oratory, which houses one of Perugino’s best works – the Adoration of the Magi (1504).
